JNHPP – Parts of Hydraulic Turbine

Client Overview: Our latest project spotlight highlights our vital contribution to the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Project (JNHPP), one of Tanzania’s flagship infrastructure developments. Located at Stiegler’s Gorge on the Rufiji River in the Morogoro/Pwani Region, this landmark project aims to significantly boost the nation’s power generation capacity. We were entrusted with the critical responsibility of transporting oversized components of the hydraulic turbines from the port of Dar es Salaam (and in some cases Mombasa) to the remote project site, in partnership with leading international contractors and logistics stakeholders.

Project Challenges and Solutions: The transportation of massive hydraulic turbine parts posed exceptional logistical challenges due to their enormous size, weight, and high precision engineering. These components required absolute care to prevent any damage during the long-haul journey through varied terrain, including rural roads, bridges, and areas with limited infrastructure.

Our team began with an in-depth route risk assessment and clearance surveys. The journey involved meticulous planning from the port through challenging corridors toward the Rufiji River basin. We deployed specialized multi-axle low-bed trailers and heavy-duty prime movers to ensure stability and compliance with height and weight restrictions. Where necessary, temporary road modifications, escort vehicles, and coordination with local authorities were implemented to guarantee safe passage while minimizing disruption to communities and the environment.

Cargo Specifications:

  • Hydraulic Turbine Components (Francis-type turbine parts for the 235 MW units):
    • Oversized rotor sections, runner blades, spiral casings, and associated heavy electro-mechanical components.
    • Individual loads characterized by significant dimensions and weights, requiring specialized handling and securing systems.

The cargo was transported using reinforced low-bed configurations designed to optimize load distribution and maintain safe clearance on the final stretches leading to the power station.

Conclusion: The successful transportation of the hydraulic turbine parts for the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Power Project (JNHPP) marks another significant milestone in Mainline Carriers’ portfolio of complex project cargo operations in Tanzania. This achievement reinforces our position as a trusted partner for major energy and infrastructure developments across East Africa.

We are proud to have played a key role in supporting this transformative national project, which will deliver clean, reliable electricity to millions of Tanzanians. This collaboration stands as a testament to our expertise, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to excellence in handling high-value, oversized industrial equipment.
